What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

What is the Internet of Things?

What is the Internet of Things?

What does the thing here mean?

It can be said to refer to all things including people.

In other words, all animals, organisms such as plants, natural resources such as minerals and water, man-made structures, machines, foods and medicines, etc. are all things that are targeted by IoT.

Of course, not all things will be connected to the internet as well.

You need to take the necessary steps to connect to the Internet one by one.

Differences between IoT and traditional IT

What difference does the Internet of Things, or IoT, make to traditional IT?

How can things that were previously considered non-members of IT systems (of course, indirectly targeted by IT system applications) become part of IT systems?

To do this, we first need to convert the interface of things, that is, the inputs to and from the things, into electrical signals that can be handled directly by the IT system.

The idea of analog and digital is important

Output from things, that is, odor (gas) generated from things, light, sound, vibration, temperature, humidity, content components that represent the state of things, etc. Many things are analog quantities (continuous system) and output (state) these are measured as an electrical signal, so it must be converted to a digital quantity (discrete system) that can be processed by an IT system.

That is, a sensor that can electrically measure the output and state of the target object is installed, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) converts the analog amount of data measured by the sensor into a digital signal.

Inputs to things, such as pressure, vibration, heating / cooling, watering / draining / drying, and other stimuli, require a drive system, or actuator, that gives substances and stimuli in a form that suits the purpose.

Since most of the input from this actuator to things is considered to be analog signals, we installed a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that converts the digital signals from the IT system into analog signals, and then installed the obtained analog signals by an amplifier to the required output level.

By installing sensors and actuators on things that did not have input / output means as digital electrical signals, things can exchange data as elements of IT systems.

In other words, when thinking about IoT, the exchange of analog and digital becomes very important.

Sensor AFE, which is indispensable for sensing things

With this in mind, Tele-Sentient is developing the Sensor I / F LSI from the perspective of how to sense various things.

In other words, we are responding to the proposition of converting the analog amount of a wide variety of things into digital and connecting it to IT systems by developing sensor plug and play, and low power consumption Sensor AFE (LSI).
